The Shelby Cobra Mk I 260 represents the genesis of one of the most iconic Anglo-American collaborations in motorsport history. Conceived in the early 1960s by Carroll Shelby, the formula was disarmingly simple yet profoundly effective: combine the lightweight and well-balanced AC Ace chassis with Ford’s compact 260 cubic inch V8 engine. The result was a car of remarkable performance and character, capable of challenging far more established European rivals. Early 260-powered Cobras are today regarded as the purest expression of the original concept, produced in limited numbers and forming the foundation upon which the Cobra legend was built.
This example of the revered 1962 Shelby Cobra Mk I 260, presents an exceptional opportunity to acquire an early Cobra with proven on-track credentials and eligibility for some of the most prestigious historic racing events Worldwide. Whilst the car does not benefit from a continuous, unbroken period history; It is nonetheless correctly UK registered and carries an appropriate CSX ‘Shelby Export’ chassis designation. It is accompanied by a UK V5c registration document, as well as valid HTP papers, confirming its suitability for international historic motorsport competition. Parts with period USA provenance were used to fully rebuild and upgrade the chassis to the specification and livery of the iconic Nassau Speed Week Cobra (CSX2002). This no longer existed in original Mk1 ‘260’ spec, as it had been upgraded to MkII (pre 66 / TT spec).
Notably, the car has received invitations to participate in both the Goodwood Members’ Meeting and the Revival event, underlining its period correctness, authenticity and competitiveness within the historic racing scene. On circuit, it has consistently demonstrated impressive performance, even recording the fastest speeds through the trap, amongst its Cobra peers.
Combining eligibility, road legality, pace, and presence – this example represents almost certainly the most compelling and cost-effective entry into early Cobra ownership. Equally suited to competitive historic racing, or high-profile road tour / rally events, it offers an engaging driving experience with that unmistakable V8 character that defines the Cobra legacy.
